“All this,” he waved his arm at the prone figures surrounding them, “on the night I was going to ask you to . . .” but then he caught himself and pressed his lips together.
Ginny’s eyes flew wide in surprise, and then took on a hard look as she said, “Going to ask me to what?”
Harry grinned sheepishly and replied, “Er, to, er, go with me to the next Chudley Cannons match.”
Ginny looked irate. “Harry Potter,” she began, sounding far too much like an angry Mrs. Weasley for Harry’s taste, “I can put you right back up there if you don’t tell me the truth.”
Harry said, “Well, er, I had this . . . something to give you . . . somewhere . . .”
“Where?” she demanded sharply, like a cat pouncing on a mouse.
“Here,” said Harry, using his wand to release the box from an inner pocket and taking it into his hand. He paused and said, “I can’t give this to you now, though, not here, not when I’m like this.”
He looked up at her hopefully, and found her wand raised threateningly and her eyes narrowed in a look that didn’t appear the least bit friendly. He hastily handed her the box with the ring and said, “Well, here . . .”
When she opened the box, it was as if what she saw inside lit up her entire face. She gazed at it wonderingly for a moment and then said, “Harry, does this mean . . .” She paused, and looked over at him lovingly, all trace of irritation gone from her face.
