Ginny smiled up at him in response. The Weasleys were calling out such things as, “Good bye. Have a good time. Be careful.” Harry waved vaguely in their direction, unable to take his eyes off Ginny as they walked toward the front door. He banged his shoulder against the door frame on the way out, but he barely noticed.
When they reached the car, the chauffeur was waiting with the door open. It took a moment for this to register with Harry, but finally he became sufficiently aware of his surroundings to guide Ginny to the door. The chauffeur closed the door behind her, and the spell was momentarily broken. Harry felt his pockets: ring, check; wand, check; wallet, check. As he walked around the car, he considered his performance: the vat wasn’t very impressive, but Ginny hadn’t seemed to mind. Good thing she didn’t suggest that he conjure water. He wondered if he would have flooded the entire house, or if he would merely have drenched Ginny. Well, he’d managed to actually start their date without major incident. Harry: 30, The Universe: 10. Harry raised both hands in a momentary mock battle cry before entering the limousine.
They were headed for the best restaurant in Exeter. Harry relaxed a little. His brain was still numb at the sight of Ginny, but she was carrying the conversation. He wasn’t paying very close attention to her words, but he was staring at her, and that seemed to be good enough. At one point she paused — he wasn’t sure exactly why — and he decided that he couldn’t wait any longer to kiss her. His lips met hers and his arms folded around her. For a few moments he was in heaven.
Then there was a bright red light, pain and darkness.
