Chapter Six

Detection

“Well,” replied Xenophilius with relief, “that’s uncommonly sensible of Mr. Fudge.  Then again, I guess that it wouldn’t reflect too well on him if Harry Potter died during his Ministry.  He could be blamed for giving Voldemort a chance to return.”

“Indeed,” replied Arjun.  “Mr. Fudge has his faults, but one thing he excels at is keeping his position as Minister of Magic secure.”

Somewhat relieved by this information, Xenophilius moved the second page in the file to the fore.  This was the warning notice delivered to Harry Potter.  It was concise, and slightly intimidating, but nothing that would cause someone to hesitate using magic in a future life-or-death situation.  Luna copied the entire notice9 into her notebook.

“So,” her father summed up, “Harry Potter could be expelled or even charged with a crime if something like this happens again.”

Arjun nodded affirmatively.

Some of my concerns:
  • Does this jive with Fudge’s early support of Harry?

“However,” continued Xenophilius, “if this was a justified use of magic, he is not in any danger of expulsion or arrest.”

“You’ve got it exactly,” he replied.

“Mr. Patil,” said Xenophilius, standing up and holding out his hand.  Luna quickly rose with him.  “I know exactly what to do with this information.  Rest assured your name, your office or the Ministry will not be mentioned in connection with it.  Also,” he added, now shaking hands with Arjun warmly, “I will make certain to include an effusive article on the Misuse of Magic Detection Equipment, and on your efficient handling of I.M.s.  You have done, and are doing, a great service to the wizarding community.”

Abashed, Mr. Patil responded, “Well, thank you, Xenophilius.  That is my job.”  He turned to shake Luna’s hand, and then said, “Let me walk you to the gate.”10
