Chapter Six

Detection

Several people were waiting to take the elevator up, and Luna exited the compartment last.  The first man to enter bumped against her father quite briskly, setting both of them off balance.  Xenophilus leaned upon Luna in an effort to remain upright.  This caused her to fall against another person waiting for the elevator.  In a moment, half a dozen people (one of them invisible) lay sprawled in a tangle on the floor.  Fortunately, in the confusion no one but Luna seemed to notice the disembodied ankles appearing amid the bodies.

After extricating themselves from the pile, Luna (with the invisible Xenophilius’ hand on one shoulder) managed to exit the building.  He guided her the short distance to Finsbury Circus by gripping one shoulder firmly in the direction they needed to turn.  After a short visit to the gents her father reappeared and they found an unoccupied bench.

Some of my concerns:
  • What could I do to make the tangle funnier?

Luna retrieved the Pwyll’s Bag from the bottom of her purse.  She unfolded it and, reaching inside, pulled out in succession:  a small covered dish containing mutton pasties, a tea kettle full of Gurdyroot tisane, two cups with saucers, plates, a pair of violently orange cloth napkins, eating utensils, a covered pan containing the remains of last night’s cottage pie and two bread and butter puddings.

Xenophilius set the tea kettle on the ground and, concealing his actions with his cloak, used his wand to heat the contents.  He belatedly cast a quieting spell when the kettle began screaming its readiness.  He then heated the cottage pie.

The Lovegoods proceeded to enjoy an excellent, hot, nourishing dinner.2  They offered portions to passersby who commented on the grandness of the meal.  The pasties were very well-received; those who accepted the deep purple-red Gurdyroot drink frequently responded with gagging noises.  When they were finished, Luna returned the remains of the meal and the dishes to the Pwyll’s Bag in careful order.  She refolded the bag3 and returned it to the bottom of her own bag.

Some of my concerns:
  • Is tisane too unusual a word?
  • Does the “Pwyll’s Bag” concept seem overused?  (From the ancient Mabinogion, appears in Mary Poppins and, of course, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.)
