Chapter Five

The Wizarding Floor

“Yes . . .” began the policeman, distracted.  “Just be careful, young lady.  Off you go, then.”  He handed her back the page with directions and, with a look of suspicion on his face, went to help the fallen man rise.  She walked to the edge of the sidewalk and whispered behind her, “Are you here?”

“Yes, let’s go!” replied her father’s voice, and they continued across the street.

A short distance away, Luna noticed a mostly deserted alley and dove into it.  Here, she finished her forbudding in peace.  When she placed the page in her bag her father whispered, “Done?”  She nodded and made her way out of the alley.

They managed to walk the next several blocks without serious incident.  Brushing up against something they couldn’t see puzzled a few pedestrians, but alarmed none.  As they neared their destination Luna said, “This is it,” forgetting to whisper.

Some of my concerns:
  • How reasonable is it that Luna could lead someone through London streets without more than an occasionally brush against others?

Her father replied quietly, “They call it NatWest Tower.”

An enormous building, unlike any Luna had ever seen, towered above them.2  It was many-sided, and its edges hung out over empty space, seeming to float on air.  This was a clear and visible use of magic!

“Don’t the Muggles realize magic is holding up this building?” she asked her father.

“Well,” he answered, “perhaps they imagine that the central portion is supporting the whole structure.”

Looking up and up at the huge structure, Luna became distracted by an interesting cloud.  “Look,” she instructed, pointing the cloud out to her father, “a Blibbering Humdinger!”  She had just mentioned them to the Muggle woman!  Perhaps Luna was, unknowingly, a psychic!

Some of my concerns:
  • Does it drive you nuts that you don’t know what a Blibbering Humdinger looks like?
