Chapter Four

The Library of Magic

When finished, she used the amulet and the command, “Reshelve.”  All of the books and scrolls floated off to return themselves to their proper storage places.  Luna had another topic to research on this level, and then a final one on the Magical Creatures level.  That would be interesting:  frequently, the books imitated the various calls of the animals they described.  Xenophilius found her there a short time later, and soon they were ready for their next stop.

Some of my concerns:

  • OK, the description of how the library works is over.  Was it a complete waste of your time?  Was it an interesting concept, poorly presented? Or (be honest) did you really like the description of the library and the magic operating there?

1 A waste of perfectly good letters.
2 Love the idea, but bored out of my skull.
3 Great — I love it when someone explains how things work.

They turned in their Catalog Amulets at the Main Desk and returned to the Entrance Hall.  As they approached the Main Doors, the left opened itself for them.  They passed through into a large, spare, ugly concrete room with a wide ramp leading upward to a lorry-sized garage door.  Along the right was a normal sized door, and Xenophilius chose this exit as the Main Door behind them closed and vanished.  He opened the door for Luna and followed her up a short flight of concrete stairs.  At the top was another door that led into a room that was quite unexpected.  Deep shag carpet — vibrant pink — covered the floor.  Dark blue wallpaper sprinkled with gold and silver astrological and mystical symbols covered the walls.  A thick, pink curtain hanging in a doorway on the opposite side of the room seemed to exude a heavy perfume.  They passed through this and into the dark Waiting Room of Madame Herophile4 Trelawny’s Fortune Telling.

Luna recalled her very first visit to Madame Herophile’s.  She had the good fortune to meet the seer personally, as Luna’s father had come especially for an interview.  Madame Herophile took great pains to explain what made her shop so important.

Some of my concerns:
  • Is there too much description in the short trip from the library to Madam Trelawny’s?
  • Can you “see” the room with the back door of Madame Trelawny’s?
