Chapter Four

The Library of Magic

“Finally,” Xenophilius had said, “the library is the recipient of donations from its wealthier patrons.”  Here he had paused to point out a large, marble urn across from the Main Desk.  Above it hovered a sign reading:

Support Your Magical Library

“Donations are used to purchase books or scrolls that are also made available to the public.”

Some of my concerns:
  • That’s the end of how the library gets its books (finally).

Today, Xenophilius and Luna needed to check some references for articles in the next Quibbler.  Crossing the gap put them at the Main Desk level.  This was the smallest level, containing only the wide Main Desk and its attendants, the donation urn and washrooms.  On both ends wide spiral marble staircases plunged into the depths of the library.  Each of them obtained a Catalog Amulet3 from an attendant at the Main Desk and hung it around their neck.  Then, as was usual, they headed toward the Periodicals level.  Moving to the right staircase, they stood together on the landing.  Xenophilius grasped both his own and Luna’s Catalog Amulets and said, “Periodicals.”  They immediately appeared at the landing on the Periodicals level.  They both enjoyed seeing the latest issue of The Quibbler made freely available to the public.  Xenophilius, always public-spirited, donated two copies of every issue.  One was for immediate use by the patrons, the other for more permanent preservation in the Library archives.  The attendant assured them that the entire history of The Quibbler was available for perusal.  She was used to their regular inquiries, and smiled while giving the same information to the same pair for the umpteenth time.  From there, Xenophilius directed his steps to the Magical Runes level while Luna set off toward the Human-like Beings level.

She arrived and saw the layout typical of most subject levels.  There was a card catalog of all of the books and scrolls available on that level.  An attendant stood behind a desk, available for assistance.  At this end of the very long rows of shelves that stretched out before her were several desks with walled sides known as carrels.

Some of my concerns:
  • Was the trip to Periodicals a complete waste of your time?  (I used it to explain movement through the gigantic library.)
  • Can you “see” the Human-like Beings level, or do you want more description (walls, floor, ceiling, desk, lighting, etc.)
