Chapter Four

The Library of Magic

They walked toward this.  Xenophilius greeted the guard by name and Luna politely curtsied.  He responded with a tip of his wizard’s hat and waved them through.  They traveled down a long, steep ramp heading down a wide hallway.  Along the walls were portraits of former great wizard and witch librarians.  Each whispered words of advice as Luna passed in front of them.  A waspish-looking crone whispered sharply, “Be quiet at all times!”  A severe old gentleman warned quietly, “Removal of items from the library is a punishable offense!”  A flamboyant middle-aged witch in multicolored garb smiled while saying, “Reading is Legilimental.”

When the ramp leveled off and they exited the passage, the Great Chamber of the British Library of Magic spread out before them.  The most striking thing about this room was the tremendous gap2 in front of them.  The distance across was at least equal to the length of a city block.  This separated the entrance from the library levels.  Spanning it was a single, elegant, spare arc of white marble wide enough for a dragon to cross.  Curving in a mighty arch above her was another chandelier-hung, white marble ceiling.

Some of my concerns:
  • Can you “see” the Great Chamber, or does it need more detailed description?
  • Is this dreadfully boring, or do you like “seeing” the Library of Magic?

Facing away from Luna at the foot of the bridge was an enormous Security Troll.  He was dressed in an expansive blue robe and cap, and from behind he looked nearly human except for his great size.  He soared well over twice Luna’s four feet seven inches, and was larger around than three men her father’s size.

As they made their way past the troll and onto the bridge, they could see before and below them on the other side the various levels of the library.  Library level stacked upon level plummeted downward across from her.  It reminded her most strongly of the tall city buildings in which Muggles park their cars, except upside down.  They could see people moving about through the open sides in every level.  Looking straight down into the gap, Luna felt vertigo:  the crevasse was so deep that she could not see its bottom.

Some of my concerns:
  • Can you “see” enough of the troll to satisfy you?
  • Can you “see” the levels of the library?
