Chapter One

The Great Divide

Everything was perfectly normal.  The girl decided that the familiar feeling was just her imagination.  She returned to tending her plants.

Her mother, Venus,2 stepped out of the house with her workbag in hand.  Walking toward her daughter and smiling, she asked, “How are they doing?”

“Oh, fine,” the young girl replied.  She began waving her arms about her head as if trying to ward off an annoying insect.  “Don’t let the wrackspurts3 get you,” she added.

“They won’t come anywhere near while I’m working on this spell,” she assured her daughter.

Some of my concerns:
  • Do you understand what “they” are in the second paragraph?

The girl studied her mother as well, just in case.  Venus looked thirty-ish, slim and medium height.  Her skin and her waist-length hair were both very pale, and she was wearing her “work clothes.”  The worn, tan, ankle-length robe sported several cloth patches of various colors.  The baggy sleeves were tucked into wide-cuffed, tan leather gloves.  The inside of the right glove was open, revealing the skin of her palm and fingers.  Well-worn boots, cracked with age and weathering, completed the outfit.

Her father had explained to her about her mother’s work.  “Venus is a true genius,” he had begun.  “She doesn’t just do magic like any other wizard or witch.  Oh, no!  What she does is create new magic that no one has ever seen.  She is so good at this that people pay her to do it.  She is an Inventor of Magic.  It’s very dangerous work, though,” he added.  “Never interrupt her while she is working.”

Some of my concerns:
  • Can you “see” Venus?
  • Is it clear that the father is not speaking to his daughter right now?
