Chapter Two

Luna’s Birthday

Xenophilius stood up, took his daughter up gently by the forearms, and began dancing around the room with her, laughing and crying and singing, “Hogwarts, Hogwarts, you’ve been accepted to Hogwarts.”

Luna, too, was really pleased.  She had heard of Hogwarts, of course, but she never expected that she would have the opportunity to attend the premiere school of magic in Britain.  Besides, her father was as happy as she had seen him in years.  They continued to dance around the kitchen, breakfast forgotten, singing together, “Hogwarts, Hogwarts, I’ve been accepted to Hogwarts.”

Suddenly, Xenophilius was crying.  Luna, surprised, hugged him and looked wonderingly up into his face.

Some of my concerns:
  • Does it seem very odd that Xenophilius had kept the possibility of Luna being accepted to Hogwarts on her eleventh birthday from her?  (My thought:  that he would not want to get her hopes up for something so uncertain.)

He noticed the look.  “It’s your mother,” he sobbed.  “She would have been so proud.”

Luna buried her face in his chest.

He continued, “She prepared for this day, you know.”

When Luna felt she had control of her own emotions, she looked up into his face again.  “What do you mean?” she asked gently.

“She saved,” he replied, still sobbing slightly.  “She worked.  She saved.  She put aside every spare coin for you to go to school.  She planned for this,” he paused, “She dreamed of this.  And now it’s all come true, just as she’d always hoped.”

Now Luna was crying softly too, no longer trying to control the tears.11

Some of my concerns:
  • Does Xenophilius seem too expressive here?  He seems to cry a lot (though this is the last of that for a few chapters...)
  • Are you bummed out by two sad-ending chapters in a row?  (Next chapter ends much more positively...)
  • Does it seem completely wrong that, shortly after the wonderful news of Hogwarts acceptance, they both end up in tears?  In other words, is there a legitimate reason for such emotion?  Is it believable?
